Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stressed the need for the establishment of security in the Persian Gulf region through collective efforts by all countries in the Middle East.
“The security of the sensitive Persian Gulf region can only be ensured through the assistance and cooperation of all regional countries; and Iran pursues a policy of establishing peace, stability and assistance to the fleet of other countries in the sea,” Rouhani said in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas on Thursday.
He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries that are independently present in far-flung and pirate-infested waters in order to provide maritime security for merchant vessels.
In line with international efforts to combat piracy, the Iranian Navy has also been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard the vessels involved in maritime trade, especially the ships and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran.
