UPDATED Piracy: Suspicious Approach in Bab el Mandeb

This incident has been confirmed by sources as occurring today, March 27th. For some reason, reporting agencies were given the wrong date.

According to the alert, an oil tanker was ‘pursued’ by six skiffs in position 13:16N-042:57E at 1323 UTC. Anti-piracy measures were enforced on the oil tanker, but it is not reported whether she was transiting with an armed security team. The skiffs apparently came to within 1.8nm.

To be honest, I’m not altogether certain that a sighting of six skiffs at 1.8nm constitutes a ‘pursuit’, but then I wasn’t on board to make that call. The region is heavily trafficked by small boats and skiffs as well as local fishing activity, so the potential for mistaking a craft’s intention is high. However, that determination must fall to the Master and PMSC, where embarked, and not someone sitting at a nice, dry desk like me.
