Nigeria: Sea Pirates Release Nigerian Hostages, Hold Dutch Nationals

Armed gunmen suspected to be sea pirates yesterday released two Nigerian hostages abducted along with three Dutch nationals on Sunday along Letugbene community in Bayelsa State.

Mr. Erhard Leffers, Mrs. Marianne Vos and Mr. Jan Andre Groenendijk have been identified as the three expatriates while the freed Nigerian hostages were identified as Mr. Femi Soewu and Mr Sunny Ofehe, the founder/executive director of Hope for Niger Delta Campaign, a non-governmental organisation based in the Netherlands.

Confirming this in a press statement issued by him via e-mail, Mr. Ofeghe said the kidnappers are still holding the foreigners while security sources say the kidnappers were yet to establish, contact or demand for ransom.

Narrating his ordeal, Ofeghe said the incident occurred while returning back to Warri after a tour of a newly built hospital funded by Chevron.

“I and Femi were later blindfolded along one of the creeks and ordered into another boat from the one they first took us with. They took us to an unknown location and left us there while still under blindfold and were kept separately.”
