On route to Middle East

Royal Navy warship HMS Northumberland this week began a seven-month deployment policing trade routes in the Middle East.

The Type 23 frigate, which is affiliated to the county and which received the Freedom of Castle Morpeth back in 2008, left Plymouth on Monday to relieve sister ship HMS Somerset.

HMS Northumberland is now poised for a deployment as part of the Royal Navy’s standing commitment to provide reassurance to the UK’s allies in the region, policing busy shipping lanes and carrying out maritime security and counter-piracy patrols.
