‘Zero zero’ target only half the piracy story

The ‘zero zero’ target – zero pirate attacks, zero seafarer hostages – of agencies supporting capacity building and the eradication of piracy in Somalia, does not ensure the end of piracy, shipping interests have pointed out.

Speaking to IHS Maritime, John Stawpert, senior adviser for environment and trade for the International Chamber of Shipping, said the target cannot “guarantee that the drivers for such criminal activity have been successfully eradicated or that sufficient maritime police capability exists in the region to combat it”.
