ReCAAP confirms tanker hijacking

ReCAAP this morning confirmed suspicions that the Thai-flagged Orapin 4 was indeed hijacked last week by pirates operating in Indonesia waters.

As reported over the weekend, maritime crime has increased recently in this area, with several attempted robberies and the incident last week involving the Orapin 4. The tanker was last heard from on May 27th as it set off for Indonesia.

Today, ReCAAP announced that the vessel arrived at Sriracha port, Chon Buri, Thailand yesterday (June 1st) at around 1930 LT. The crew reported that the criminals boarded the ship and stole the cargo, although the exact quantity taken is unknown at this point. Presumably, another tanker came alongside for STS ops, and regional forces will no doubt be on the lookout, assuming the crew were able to provide a description. According to the report, the pirates destroyed communications equipment and the investigation is ongoing.
