Captains held for illegal fuel transfer

GEORGE TOWN: The captains of two foreign ships and their crew were arrested after the two vessels were found illegally transferring fuel off Muka Head near here.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) also seized the vessels when officers found one of them was in the midst of transferring 50,000 litres of diesel to the other.

The Mongolia-registered MT Victory Star was found next to Honduras-registeredMT Moresby 9 at about 5.30pm on Tuesday 12 nautical miles northwest of Muka Head.

MMEA District Two enforcement chief Kapt Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said the 25 crew members of the two ships were Indonesians and Thais.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 491b(1)(k) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance.

Maritime Security News:

An interesting one, this. Regulars will recognise the name “Moresby 9”. The ship was hijacked and had part of its cargo stolen in July; apparently the third time the ship had been hit in 12 months. So this story has peaked some interest in anti-piracy circles. We shall have to wait for the MMEA’s conclusions.
