Looking for the true cost of oil theft and piracy in Nigeria? Good luck with that. Even the Nigerian press can’t seem to get their heads around the figures. Reports in Business Day and The Nation feature such insanely different figures, it’s actually making my brain hurt. It would be all too easy to just brush this off as poor journalism, but we’re talking about a difference of $23 billion. Not exactly chicken feed.
If the country’s journalists can’t get the basics like this right, what hope is there? Who needs spin?! Clearly, the actual figure is the higher. But with this sort of malarkey going on, isn’t it nice that the politicians and figures in defence can quickly point to the lower figure?
