Vessels laden with smuggled rice, firearms seized off Sulu

Vietnamese vessel MV An Bien 89-ALCI and three Filipino boats loaded with 3,275 tonnes of smuggled rice and high-powered firearms were seized off Sulu on 23 February, Philippines military officials have confirmed.

A naval task force unit headed by Lieutenant Commander Richard Rosales and Lieutenant Ed Leonelle Marvin Mapalo intercepted the four vessels near Patah Island, said navy spokesperson Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela.

MV AN BIEN-89-ALCI had 17 Vietnamese crew led by ship captain Nguyen Van Loi, while the Filipino vessels were identified as Fatima Nurmina, Boy 1, and KH.
